I started blogging late May of last year when I was a few months into getting WhyGoSolo “off the ground”. At the time, the intention behind blogging was to capture the journey I was undertaking with starting a web start-up.

I never would have imagined that the blog would serve as the catalyst to opening up the real world of the web, communities, connections and information to me. (But it did and we’ll talk more about that.)

I moved to a new blog in October of 2007, when the Official Plugged-In Blog for WhyGoSolo came online. I continued to capture the journey on the new blog but quickly came to realize that the content, although heartfelt, educational, and relevant was starting to be out of place on the Company blog.

Another thing I realized is that I have acquired a great deal of knowledge. I often get sought out for guidance and advice so I want to be more active in passing the knowledge along to other inspiring start-up entrepreneurs. This is how the new blog came to be - I need a more appropriate place to blog about the topics that are important to me.

When I was deciding what content I would cover in this new blog, I thought back on the things I have done, learned, wished I’d been told, and common mistakes I have noticed people make and the main key points that came to mind which tie it all together are:

When the time came to set a title for the blog…fresh on mind was the fact that being entrepreneur is hard work that requires deliberate actions, a lot of planning, flexibility, perseverance, and dedication; you can’t just hope you’ll get lucky.

Being a Marine, the thought of hoping to just “get lucky without proper planning” made me think of the expression Spray and Pray. Spray and Pray is a derisive term for firing an automatic firearm towards an enemy in long bursts, without aiming. This may be done especially by the poorly trained.

Spray and Pray is what you do when you have no plans, no vision, no foundation, you get scared and you lack training.

So be it to hit a target, launch a business or social media campaign – you can’t spray and pray, you have to identify your vision, create a plan and establish a solid foundation.

Don’t Spray and Pray! is a blog for people interested in exploring those steps in relation to their interest in social media, the web and entrepreneurship.

We’re going to discuss visions, making plans, establishing solid foundations and proper execution. This is a blog to gain insight, inspiration and support.

I don’t hold any punches – this blog will tell the story as I have experienced it and as I see the world.
